The Human Library

On Friday the 29th of September The Human Library came to Bird l’th pub in Urmston, the Human Library is an international organisation and movement that started in Denmark in the millennium with an aim to challenge prejudice against social contact between people. It works in a similar way to an normal library, people (like books) can be loaned out this is then went you will engage in conversation with somebody that you probably wouldn’t normally.

It is now in partnership with Heineken it allows readers and books to chat over a beer, its similar to their ‘Open Your World’ campaign. Every book in the human library has a real story and a real life; Once in discussion you can talk about anything you want, debate, small talk or even to help discuss the meaning of life.

Who can you meet?

On there website there is a number of different people you could meet. A convert? Somebody who has covered from one religion to another and for what reasons. Somebody who’s been sexually abused? They tell their life story to end the stigma so that good can come of a bad situation. An ex solider with PTSD? fighting to keep their sanity after they left the battle in their career. A refugee? forced to leave all their belonging, their home and sometimes even their family behind to save their own live. A body modification extremist? living with people connately staring or avoiding them purely based on their looks. Somebody who is polyamorous? defining love is always hard who’s to say what is right. An alcoholic? nudist? or even somebody who’s unemployed.

The message of this event is pretty simple, don’t judge a book by its cover.
